Creativity Solutions For Moms | A Series to Help You Get Creative

by Alissa Marquess on September 26, 2011

Creativity Solutions For MomsBeing creative and being a mom- the two can go hand it hand, but often we moms feel like we have to neglect our creative selves in order to keep up with the demands of motherhood.  How can we combine the two?

Each Monday Creativity Solutions for Moms will focus on how you can find time and make space for creativity, and how to incorporate creative practice into your everyday life.

I’d love your input for this series!  What are your obstacles to creativity?  How do you combine motherhood and creating?  What works for you and what are your creative blocks?

I am not some creativity guru.  I am working on these problems myself.  To help you feel at home I made short video that shows you my biggest creative obstacle:

To help continue the conversation I’ve created a community at blog frog. Hop over to ask questions or give advice (please!) about creativity and motherhood.  You can click over to the Creativity Solutions Forum to join our conversation any time.

I know that parenting creates unique dilemmas when it comes to being creative.  While it does present you with innumerable opportunities for creativity, it also leaves you with little time to yourself, lots of kid type clutter and sometimes a serious lack of energy.  We’ll be taking a look at all of these things and more so that you can we can get creative!

What creative obstacle should we work on?  Leave a comment and let me know, or pop over to the new forum!

One of the biggest obstacles that I see is that people tend to limit creativity to just art, music & other crafting activities (such as sewing). They’ll look at someone’s fabulous creation and say “I can’t do that. I’m not creative.” I’ve been guilty of that myself. But the truth is, everyone is creative! You may not have the same skills or the same strengths as another but, you are still creative. Find what makes you feel creative and go for it! (Can you tell I’m passionate about this?)

I agree and I’m passionate about it too! What I find difficult sometimes is that I tend to be creative in a rather artsy way, so I think people don’t believe me, or like I lose my credibility when saying creativity isn’t limited to artistic pursuits. I probably need to write more about what creativity IS :)

Seriously love that you called it a crap room. That is dead on! I would call my space several crap closets :)

My biggest obstacle to creativity is time for planning. The evening hours fly by too quickly… and my best ideas come during the day when I am playing with my kids. I need a “freeze” button so that I can freeze the kids during my creative moment, run and get prepped, and then come back and do something fun with them.

Some of our best ideas are spur of the moment though and involve little planning… so sometimes the lack of planning ends up helping my creativity.

Excited about this series. I need some motivation to de-clutter my craft space again.

I need motivation too! I figure by writing about it here I’ll be building in some accountability and I hope building up some community. We can cheer each other on :) I think we’ll try to come up with some crafts de-cluttering challenges to do together in the forum. I’m just glad others are interested in this too so we can collect more ideas about how to be creative as a mom!
