First Sewing Lesson

Our neighbor was moving this summer gave us a sewing machine she didn’t want any more.  I told James it could be his machine and for the past couple months James pleaded for me to teach him how to use it.  I put it off while I was hugely pregnant and put it off while I was just newly post partum, but finally, Finally the other day I got it together to show him how to sew.

Serious concentration as he tries out the different stitches on a fabric scrap

We got a fabric scrap out and I just had him stitch all over it to get the feel of how the machine works.

I showed him how to put the needle down and lift the foot to turn the fabric.

He enjoyed “making roads” and liked finding out what the zig-zag switch did.  I was surprised at how easily he manipulated the fabric.

James shows off the corner of the cloth diaper that he fixed for me.  Good Work!

I thought he’d like a quick feeling of accomplishment so I grabbed a cloth diaper that had seen better days- it h ad a ripped corner.  I trimmed it for him and then he sewed a zig-zag stitch along the edge and a straight stitch next to that.  Thanks for the repair job James!  I see some fun sewing projects in our future!

Love it, Alissa. Can’t wait to teach T to sew. I’ve been looking forward to it for decades.

I am SO excited to sew with him. I think I’ll make him a little sewing kit for Yule his year.

Sewing school: 21 sewing projects kids will love to make by Amie Petronis Plumley & Andria Lisle has some fun projects for kids. They look like they were made by kids, imperfections and all. It’s a fairly new book that I was able to get at my local library. Several bloggers have done projects or reviews, too.
