Kitty Cat Baby Hat- From a Sweater Sleeve

by Alissa Marquess on October 30, 2010

This baby kitty is wearing a hat made from a couple recycled sweaters.

Our model is sleeping...

I used a soft brown sleeve out of my felted sweaters basket and made this hat in less than an hour today.  If you’d like to make a hat of your own you can follow the directions below- it’s easy and cute.

Stand at cutting table and contemplate sweater sleeve to try and come up with plan...

Give up on planning and just start cutting. This arch will make the top curve over the head. In hindsight I should have cut it less flat so it smoothed into the sides better, but oh well- can always be fixed later in sewing.

The next cut is another one to help the hat fit to the head. I folded the sleeve in half to cut the arch.

Your sleeve now should have four curved points at the top. Cut the ears from another felted sweater of contrasting color. I used a bit thicker sweater for them so they'll stand up. I cut triangles for the middle out of a scrap of the sleeve.

Tuck the ears into the sides up top making sure you have wrong sides of the fabric facing out and the fronts of your ears facing the way you want (I put the sweaters seam on the back of the head.) Sew across these.

Turn your work sideways and sew across the resulting arch to close the top of the hat. Theses seams are where you can choose to smooth out the curve more if you don't want your hat to have pointy corner spots at the end of each seam.

Here's what you've got when you turn it right side out!

Do initial trimming (I cut a straight line up to where I thought the face opening should end and a slant towards the nape of the neck.) Wait impatiently for baby to wake up...think about if wrangling a hat onto her would wake her...decide to wait.

After final trimming here's what the hat looks like. I'll have a cozy kitty cat for Halloween tomorrow!

Yay, she's awake! I did the finally fitting after I'd tried it on her- I wound up cutting a slight crescent shape out of the front and trimming away excess fabric from the back so the ties wouldn't be so fat.
