Because I feel like I’m supposed to want to watch my kids play soccer. I have tried to be excited about it. I have brought snacks and even a folding chair, but after four seasons I have come to the conclusion- I just don’t really like it. I can do crafts with my kids, I can take them out on hikes and I can cook with them and really enjoy it, but watching soccer…no.
And I’m done trying to pretend that I eventually will fall in love with it. If my kids keep playing soccer I will be supportive and I will come to games, at least a few. I’m not gonna mope, but I’m not going to pretend it’s my forte either, and I sure as heck am not going to sign up to coach.
And for some of you, I wonder if crafts are like that. Maybe you’ve tried to like crafts and you’ve even tried a number of different crafts and you just find that this is NOT your strong point.
I want to let you know that that’s ok.
I mean, yeah- I think it’s worthwhile having a basic crafts basket and trying out a variety of different ways to create with your kids, and I think sometimes it really does take practice to find ways you enjoy creating together. But I think it’s also worthwhile being open to the idea that you have your own strengths and ways you really shine at connecting with your kids. No matter what other moms like me are doing YOU are your kids mom and if grumping at crafts together takes you away from time that would be better spent doing something you can REALLY have fun with, then it might not be worth it.
We’ve only got a short time that these kids are going to be little and we may as well use it in ways that bring us joy instead of feeling guilty for being who we are.
